Event Data Recorders (EDRs) are present in all new vehicles. They record information immediately before, during, and after collisions. The intent of the devices is to provide data for improving vehicle safety.
State Senator Matt Rosendale and I both introduced bills in the 2015 legislature to ensure EDR data couldn’t be used for prosecuting people. You shouldn’t have to give up your right against self-incrimination just to own a new vehicle with better safety features.
Rosendale’s bill passed and was signed into law by the governor. Mine was tabled in committee after his passed.
